What is Christmas Punch?

Christmas punch (non-alcoholic) is the perfect holiday drink to celebrate the festive season!!

It is a blend of cranberry juice, orange with pineapple juice, and simple syrup mixed with carbonated soda, served in a punch bowl garnished with cranberries, oranges, lime, and rosemary for that festive look.

This mocktail is bubbly, perfectly festive, holiday-appropriate, quick, easy to make, and refreshing with the right balance of sweet and tart.

It is loved by all, kids, young, adults, and old thus making it perfect for a Christmas party, new year's celebration, or just any celebration!!

You can easily turn this easy Christmas punch into a cocktail by adding some rum, vodka, or alcohol of choice for the extra holiday spirit!

Recipe Ingredients

Ingredients for Non Alcoholic Christmas Punch on a white surface with white background

Cranberry juice –I prefer using a 100% Cranberry juice blend with no added sugar. This juice is usually a blend of cranberry, apple, grape, etc. You can also use a combination of cranberry and pomegranate juice. I don't recommend the cranberry juice cocktail as that has a lot of added sugar.

Orange with Pineapple juice - I find the orange with pineapple juice blend gives the best tasting punch. If you cannot find this blend use a 1:1 ratio of pulp-free orange juice and pineapple juice.

Simple syrup - I prefer to sweeten the punch with some simple syrup. You can use this to taste or skip it based on taste preference. You can also use sweeteners of choice like honey or maple syrup but these will alter the taste slightly.

Carbonated drinks - I prefer using a combination of Ginger Ale and Sprite for this recipe. Along with the fizz, ginger ale gives the drink a subtle ginger flavor while sprite gives it that lemon-lime flavor. You can use either of them too based on your preference. Or substitute Sprite for 7Up, Moutain Dew, or any lemon-lime soda of choice.

Garnish -  I have used fresh cranberries, lemon, orange slices, rosemary for garnish. They not only provide the drink a festive holiday look but also help impart mild flavors of their own. Alternately you can also use pomegranate seeds or cherries.

Ice - Add ice for an extra chilled drink. You can avoid ice if you are using chilled juices.

Please refer to the recipe card for exact measurements of ingredients.

Punch bowl - Traditionally punch bowl is used to serve the punch. But you can also use a pitcher or dispenser or simply a large mixing bowl. I use this cake stand that doubles up as a punch bowl when inverted and love it.

In addition, you will need a ladle to pour the juice (some punch bowls come with it), a measuring cup, and glasses or party plastic cups.

Recipe Tips

Use good quality 100% cranberry juice and skip the cocktail kind as they have added sugar.

Use chilled juices and add ice just before serving to prevent the ice from diluting the drink and watering it down.

You can adjust the sweetness of the drink to your taste by adding simple syrup (or sweetener of choice) to your preference or skip it completely.

To make simple syrup at home add equal parts (1:1) of sugar and water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Cool completely and then store in a glass jar and seal tightly with a lid. Keep refrigerated for 2-3 weeks.

Add carbonated drinks like sprite and ginger ale just before serving to prevent the drink from losing its fizz and going flat. I like this drink even after the fizz goes.

Don't skip the garnishes, they add to the festive look!! Just be sure to remove the cranberries while serving to kids to prevent choking hazards.

For that extra special festive look, freeze fresh cranberries, orange slices, lemon slices, rosemary, and water in a bundt pan to make a wreath ice ring! When ready to serve, unmold the ring by running it under water and add to the punch bowl.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this punch be made ahead of time?

Yes, this punch can be made ahead of time. Just don't add the ice or soda until just before serving so as not to dilute or lose its fizz. Pour the carbonated drinks like sprite and ginger ale just before serving.

Can I add alcohol to this punch?

Yes, for an adults-only party, you can add vodka or rum to this recipe. Or keep the bottles on the side for everyone, to add to their individual cups.

Why is punch called punch?

Punch is derived from the Hindi word "panch" which means "five" since this drink was originally made using just five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon/lime juice, water, and spices. Nowadays there are many varieties and variations of punch.
